To be fair, not a single high-profile person in the Alley has moved out, yet NY keeps getting folks to move here. That speaks volumes, but who cares? All I care about is how New York is doing. And New York is doing fine. There’s money for good ideas, entrepreneurs taking risks, second and third generation entrepreneurs mentoring new ones, and great, vibrant communities.”

- Face It: NYC Is Not The Best Place For A Startup

Opening Scoop St. in New York

scoopst:

Today was a big day at Scoop St. HQ in Union Square. After nearly a year and a half of hard work and understanding the mechanics, logic and success of a buying mechanism known as “tuangou” in China and select niches online - we opened Scoop St. to the masses (well, the masses of New York City to start) offering unbelievable deals from amazing local businesses. We’re thrilled to be sharing what we consider our DNA to the rest of NYC through the power of group buying.

We’re also fortunate to receive some great reviews and spotlight from some of our favorite publishers throughout the country, such as The New York Times, The Business Insider and ReadWriteWeb. Take a look at what they had to say about group buying and our thoughts on a new means of local marketing for small businesses.

To friends/family/members - we’re still replying to all tweets/emails/phone calls to thank everyone of you for your support to date, so please be on the lookout for replies. :)

To Better Deals, Together!

- The Scoop St. Team

I can’t forget to give a BIG thank you to a special lady: Amanda K. :)

Introducing Hackers & Founders 2010 and Demo Night

Happy new year all! After our first year of organizing Hackers & Founders in New York City, both Justin and I are extremely excited to start the new year off right with our eighth meetup on Thursday, January 14 from 6-8PM (RSVP) and first of its kind (details below).

Started as NYC’s Hacker News meetup, Hackers & Founders has evolved into something more of a meeting. In many ways, I’ve met many of my good friends in the NY technology and startup community through monthly get-togethers over beer and burgers. In the first eight months of organizing H&F, we’ve seen attendance at each event grow by leaps - the first meetup, if I remember correctly, was a few of us at Shake Shack talking about the top news stories on HN and discussing the ins/outs of entrepreneurship. Since that time, gatherings typically average 70-90 attendees with this month’s anticipating the 100+ mark.

Over the last two months, we’ve been toying with the idea of showcasing our code, project and companies before the H&F community. For January, we’re excited to announce a Demo night in order to do just that. In addition to our “beer and burgers” meetup, we’ll run through a new format before the community. However, in order to do so, we’ll need inaugural demo participants. Are you interested?

If so, here’s how it’s going to work (and subject to change after we learn more about the result following H&F #8):

5 Companies, 5 Minutes Each: 5 selected companies or individuals will present what they’re working on in a “lightning” format, meaning each will have 5 minutes to present followed by short audience Q/A.

Value Through Feedback: After each presentation, we’ll have two minutes per presenter for questions and feedback about the technology, company or code showcased. Like H&F, feedback on what you’re working on is not only appreciated but necessary!

Dogpatch Labs NY as Venue: Jon, Peter and the folks at Polaris Venture Partners are kind enough to host the H&F community for our inaugural demo night in the brand new space of Dogpatch Labs. Literally one block up from Stand Burger, the space is perfect for something like this.

Beer and Burgers at Stand Afterwards: After demos, we’ll walk down the block to Stand for the usual - beer, burgers and H&F!

So, if you’re interested in presenting, please fill out this quick application and we’ll do our best to get you in the queue for demos on January 14.

See you then!

About

Hackers & Founders is a monthly gathering of New York’s startup and programmer community. Meeting the last Thursday from 6-8PM, H&F connects fellow entrepreneurs with new ideas, support and feedback from over 250 members involved in technology industry (usually over beer and burgers). Starting in January 2010, H&F will host “lightning demos” from participating startups and programmers - showing off their latest code and product before a crowd willing to lend feedback and ideas on how to improve. Interested in attending or presenting?
