Do you own a tablet? How old are you?

Unlike smartphones, which are most popular with younger adults ages 18-34, we see the highest rates of tablet ownership among adults in their late 30s and early 40s. In fact, almost half (49%) of adults ages 35-44 now own a tablet computer, significantly more than any other age group.

The above is a simple principle I learned in 7th grade algebra. But I’ve lately found its a common theme in how I think about everything.

I was initially taught to use it as a tool to un-stump myself in factoring - take out an “x” or an “(x+1)” in some “ax^2 + bx + c” equation.

For the past several years I’ve been making comparisons between the dotcom bubble and this current tech cycle. At this point, that we’re in a period of exuberance (be it rational or otherwise) is a given (26 year olds don’t sell companies with little revenue for $1.1 billion in cash unless something awesome is happening - and FWIW I think the Yahoo/Tumblr deal is a win all around). But in July 2011 I said: “The question isn’t are we in a bubble. The question is are we in 1995 or 1999.” The question, therefore, remains: at what point in the cycle are we. The answer: it’s still early. Here’s why….

It is now official that Tumblr will become part of Yahoo. Looking at what we achieved in 90 days at the start of 2013, it’s clear that we’re following through on our ethos of “focusing small” but “building backwards” to deliver a quality, on-the-go and connected experience in the leisure travel market.

Some highlights from the quarter:

Mobile now represents over 35% of traffic to Travelzoo throughout North America and Europe. When we started in 2011, mobile constituted just 10% of visitors engaging with the brand.

Our product and engineering teams unveiled a complete overhaul of the iPhone app, skyrocketing passed 1.5 million global downloads and grabbing a feature from Apple in the App Store. Not just that, we introduced the first single-purpose app for Local Deals merchants for faster paperless redemption, a huge (photo centric) update to the Android app and enhanced mobile marketing features throughout the web experience.

The social audience continues to grow, passing a huge milestone of 1,000,000 engaged followers on Facebook and Twitter channels throughout the world.

Redesigned desktop deal pages for Travel and Local Deals, with a greater and cleaner emphasis on sharing via Facebook, Twitter and Email.

Beta partner with Twitter as one of 10,000 developers to launch Twitter Cards for rich-media views of Travelzoo content on the web and in Twitter’s mobile apps.

Thank you to every member of the team (in Mountain View, CA + New York, NY + Europe - you know who you are!) for being inspired to “ship” and deliver our own journey into the future.

Spotted last night in the back of a yellow cab in NYC: a...

Spotted last night in the back of a yellow cab in NYC: a sponsored ad for the Travelzoo mobile app!
