That seems believable to us. But what do we know? We’re just bloggers. So we asked a professional: Keith Rabois, who heads up biz dev at Slide, the reigning king of Facebook apps. Keith’s response: Yeah, that looks real to me. (via Is The Redesign Killing Facebook Apps?)

“Or perhaps, like Gates, you just find Facebook a little…creepy. Businesspeople often claim to use Facebook for vague “market research” purposes or to satisfy idle curiosity. But the social norms of social networking are still in flux, making privacy a real issue, says internet-marketing writer David Weinberger. “Younger people violate older people’s idea of proper behavior when it comes to privacy,” he says.”

The Facebook redesign seems to have missed two points:

  • Whitespace is good, but adding whitespace around a billion tiny things doesn’t really solve the problem of having a billion tiny things on screen.
  • There’s a difference between activity and content. Content is activity, but activity is not content. Showing me the fine details of how my high-school classmates change their Facebook settings isn’t interesting or relevant. It brings me no value.

Thoughts?

“As supporters started to join MyBo in early 2007, Mr. Hughes brought a growth strategy, borrowed from Facebook’s founding principles: keep it real, and keep it local. Mr. Hughes wanted Mr. Obama’s social network to mirror the off-line world the same way that Facebook seeks to, because supporters would foster more meaningful connections by attending neighborhood meetings and calling on people who were part of their daily lives. The Internet served as the connective tissue.”
